Angler Update:  Welland River Community Fisheries Involvement Programs

For Immediate Release:  March 4, 2009

The Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority is continuing its efforts to protect and improve the Welland River fisheries.  For several years, local anglers have been keeping a fishing log book, or Angler Diary.  With the information that is collected through this Angler Diary program, the Conservation Authority has been able to accumulate valuable information which is assisting with the ongoing restoration and fisheries improvement programs for the river.  In 2008 over 30 anglers recorded information through the Welland River Angler’s Diary Program including species of fish caught, the location of the catch, and consumption.  In addition, anglers have recorded information concerning water quality conditions and other types of wildlife sightings.

All participants who turned in the completed diaries by the December 18th deadline were entered in a draw for a prize. This year’s recipients are Bruce Downs of Beamsville, Paul Bird of Welland and Larry Peters of Fonthill.  Congratulations to our winners!

The Welland River Fisheries Angler Diary Program will continue in 2009 and the Authority invites public participation once again.  Interested Anglers can contact the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority for additional information on how to get involved.  The Authority would like to remind anglers and their families that they should follow the advice of the “Guide to Eating Ontario Sport Fish in Ontario” to ensure safe consumption.
